Today is my dad’s birthday.
His birthday, his death day, my parent’s anniversary, the opening of football season, and my kiddos’ milestones all highlight his absence.
We all miss him.
My dad epitomized unconditional love. Regardless of my mistakes, shortcomings, bad decisions, or back-talking, my dad never loved me any less – and I knew it.
Indeed, my dad’s unconditional love for me served as a model for the unconditional love of Christ. “See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!” 1 John 3:1
As I seek more Jesus, I know the only way to get closer to Jesus is to spend time with Him, building a relationship with Him just as I built one with my dad.
Time together…that’s how I became a daddy’s girl.
We watched football and John Wayne.
He attended every event in which I ever participated – even some practices.
He ate dinner with us every night.
He spent his time laid off from work playing with me and teaching me how to twirl a yardstick – true story – just don’t ask my mom about all the Home Interior we broke that summer or about my dad’s reaction to a little scuffle I got into with the neighbor boy;)
My dad. He was there. Always. He loved us. He provided for us. Period.
That’s my father in Heaven too.
He is there. Always. He provides for my every need. Period.
And, I can only get More Jesus by spending time with him – quality time – talking with him and reading His Word.
I miss my dad today, but I am comforted in knowing my Father in heaven loves me so much that He died a horrendous death on a cross and rose again, defeating death so I could live eternally.
And, see my dad again someday.
Happy Birthday, Dad!
